Announcing the Free Flex Enterrprise Services License

Along with announcing Flex 2 Beta 1 and the free Flex Framework SDK, we also announced some changes to pricing for Flex Enterprise Services. When it ships, Flex Enterprise Services 2 will be free of charge for use with a limited number of concurrent users on a single, non-clustered server. This is huge news and we hope will make FES more widely available for many users.

Note that CNet, in addition to the Flex Builder pricing error that I posted about previously, was also in error with regards to pricing for Flex Enterprise Services, which they asserted would essentially be the same. Aral pointed this out in a comment to my previous posting

The only price that we announced for FES is the free one that I just mentioned. We did also announce that there would be additional commercial license options for Flex Enterprise Services, including on a per CPU, per project, and per enterprise basis. However, we have not yet announced pricing details on any of the Flex 2 product. Those will be announced closer to ship.

The Word on Flex Builder Pricing

CNet ran a story today that is being picked up by some blogs that asserts that Flex Builder 2 will be priced at $1000. This is incorrect! What we said is that Flex Builder 2 will be priced less than $1000, which is what we've been saying since we first started talking about it. We have not yet announced pricing, but we are holding firm to our commitment to keeping under $1000.

Free Flex Framework SDK

Tomorrow we will be releasing Beta 1 of the Flex 2 Product lLne, which includes Flex Builder, the Flex Framework and Flex Enterprise Services. You'll be able to download it at from http://labs.adobe.com. As part of that, we're announcing some very important changes to the way we license Flex.

One of the big changes we're making is that the Flex Framework, which includes everything you need to build Flex Apps, such as the Framework and command line compilers, will be available for free. Not just for beta, but for good! I think that this is going to be huge and really open up developing apps for the Flash Platform to a much wider range of developers.

When we first started developing Flex 2, one of our main goals was to make Flex and Flash development available to a much wider range of developers than we have previously. Putting the Flex Framework into Flex Builder was the first step, but we wanted to go further. With very public apps such as Yahoo Maps being developed in Flex, we wanted to make sure that everyone who was inspired by them had the opportunity to extend them or create their own cool apps, and we didn't want price to be a barrier.

The SDK isn't yet available, as we just finalized the decision on making it available. We've been heads down finishing the Beta so all of this is happening quckly. We do hope to make it available in the near future.
